"Gold has a price; Clay is price-less" - sone ka hai mol, sohnia; miti hai unmol sohnia.

A sequence from a 1984 Hindi film adaptation of the classic Romeo-Juliet style, Punjabi love legend, "Sohni-Mahival." A Silk Road trader from Central Asia, on one of his sales trips, falls in love with a girl in Gujrat, Punjab. She is the daughter of a potter (an artisan in her own right). He ends up spending all his money on the pots and stranding himself, mad in love, in Punjab Eventually the star-crossed lovers meet a tragic end as the usual deception and bigotry between families makes their marriage impossible.

This song has Sufi overtones to it, comparing humans to clay/earth, i.e. that which can be molded in various ways into forms but also broken down again easily. My favorite line is the part where the hero Izzat Beg sings, "I feel like making a statue in your image out of this clay. I'd worship it and be called an infidel." Of course, the heroine responds, "For shame! Don't speak blasphemy, dear."

The song is in Hindi, with a couple Punjabi words thrown in for effect.

Of course, it features the beautiful Poonam Dhillon who, being a Punjabi Jatti herself, has the perfect "look" for this portrayal.
