+ Thanks to everyone who Clicked to see my vid + Well, here's a quick video of me making a few of a big batch of basic flowerpots / plant pots in terracotta / earthenware clay.
As these are only pretty basic cheap garden pots I need to make 'em fast and sell 'em cheap, hence the speed at which I'm making 'em.
It's almost impossible to compete with all the imported Far Eastern stuff of which some is unfortunately made using Child labour but I have to try.
Also I fire my pots to such a high temperature that they are properly frost resistant unlike the cheap imported ones which will fall apart at the 1st sign of frost.
I'm trying to make them in just one pull or lift and then just sort out the shape a bit.
It's really satifying to pull a pot up this far but that's just the good old Terrracotta clay and all its benefits.
Not exactly Isaac Button speed but not far off...LOL.
Anyway I don't know why terracotta clay is so easy to throw as this is smooth clay and not the rough grogged stuff, but as you can see you can make a pot with just one lift or pull in about one minute.
Thanks for clicking to see the video and I'll be adding some more soon.

What kind of clay are you using? Is it a cone 10 clay?

    California

  • It's Terracotta or Earthenware clay.

    Cheers Dan.

  • Now that's a video. Very interesting to see you repeat throw so easily, real Isaac Button stuff (we're not worthy! etc.). I hope the clay was very soft, because otherwise I'm going to have to get down the gym and work on my arms: You were centering in a couple of seconds!

    Mark.

  • @brookfieldpottery It's all down to my double jointed little finger on my right hand.

Just have a look at the angle of it.

I've never noticed it before i looks almost dislocated.

    Pinky Finger Power LOL!!!

  • Hi Dan! I love watching you work!! So how high DO you fire your terracotta? I haven't tried earthenware before. I take classes at a midfire studio.

  • @ThatLynnGirl we fire to cone 02 so around 2050f for unglazed but you could go higher if you want to glaze it.

    Cheers,Dan.

  • Your a pro.

  • okay thanks guys :) i was just curious.

    @youdanxxx

of cource it was a teacher. you are right lol. but i was just asking. thanks for the info :)

  • I'm at school for art edu. I'm concerned because I cannot raise a single vessel to be over 4/5 inches tall. What am I doing wrong?

  • Water is only a problem if it's been left to be absorbed by the clay for a while. Dan works so quickly that by the time he's done and takes the water out, many other potters are still pulling up the walls!

  • @youdanxxx thought so.
