Two of the popular short wave radio receivers sold at Radio Shack from the 1970s were the Realistic Astronaut 8 and Realistic DX-160. Short wave listening was fun back in the 1970s when there were many International broadcasters on air. I think many would agree that the DX-160 was one of the more popular radios used by SWLers and ham radio operators alike during this period.

  • I have the Astronaut 8. It's a great radio. I wished I could one day have the DX 160. My dad bought me the Astronaut 8. He gave it to me for Christmas 1972. the store had JUST got them in. It was brand new for 1973 but my dad was able to get one Christmas Eve 1972! He knew I loved radios and this was the best AC/DC portable they had at the time.

  • @Lockemeister Excellent. Thanks for sharing your experiences with the Astronaut 8 Realistic Radio. It is a good radio--- expecially for the time period. We got ours about the same time--- age here by the way, is 56. Best to you from Alabama !!! 73.

  • I stand corrected. Thanks. 73

  • Does anyone know how to wire a DC pack using the plug that came provided with the radio. If i use 8 1.5v D cells how do I wire them to the 3 prong plug.

  • I like to DX and pull in SW as well. You have a nice collection there. My dad had an Astronaut 8 and I wish I had not let it get away from me.
