Tony Greig is responsible for two of the most disastrous decisions in cricketing history. He is best known for the "grovel" remark about the West Indies that resulted in Richards and co. crushing England to a pulp in 1976. But the arguably more stupid decision was the one to bowl a bouncer to Lillee in the 1975 series in Australia. Unfortunately for Grieg, the 1975 Australian team included two of the fastest bowlers the world has ever seen.

On the way back to the pavilion, Lillee looked at Grieg and said:

"Just remember who started this."

For the rest of the series, Lillee and Thomson battered England. At the end of the series, an editorial cartoon succinctly summed up England's travails over the season:

"Ashes to Ashes, dust to dust,
If Thomson doesn't get you, Lillee must."

Highlights and commentary.

  • Every cricket thread I see on You Tube ends up in stupid childish arguments. Why can't you just enjoy the cricket and say something constructive. Great competitive cricket on this vid, hats off to Lilley and Thompson they made the England line-up (apart from Greig) look like schoolboys.

  • I like the implication that Lilian Thomson would have somehow bowled like gentlemen if it wasn't for Lillee being bounced out in the first innings. When England bowl to an intimidatory strategy (bodyline & all that) it's a diplomatic incident that we still get reminded of. When the Aussies bowl even more dangerously, the crowd chant for blood... it's all a big laugh! Sorry but that's hypocritical.

  • 70's cricket was my childhood. Going along to watch Thommo and Lillee was was the best.

  • Is it me or was cricket tougher and more raw edged than today?

  • @pcaminador There's nothing better than watching a good short ball thumping into a Pom's ribcage.

  • Even though Tony Greig sometimes seems to exist only to put his foot in his mouth, I like him, as a cricketer, and as a man. And he's quite right, if bowlers are having a go at you (even though it's bloody difficult at times), you have to attack them, and take the fight to them. A great all-rounder, and a good England skipper.

More lame stuff. A boring World Cup pool match against an England side knackered after terminating you Aussie losers in THE ASHES - which apparently only counts when the whining Oz aren't being made to look the talentless, overpaid, self-obsessed chumps they really are. And Shane Warne retired five years ago 'mate'. But you go right on living in the past - and we'll go right on thrashing you. Suits me.

  • @85Aheadstix Not short of confidence are you :-) You might be right...and you might be wrong. In the meantime - enjoy! A bit of humble pie never did anyone harm.

  • @pcaminador1 To fuckin right we wont stay down pom!.

  • @ludocrat Managed to kick your arses for 17 years, face it england, even at your best, your still shit!.

    PS, WTF!!!??, ireland beat you!!??

And you will never have warnie!, so suck soggy chips n gravy bitches!.

  • the wicket keeper and slips just run the same distance (13-14 run steps) as for any other fast bowler so what is this about them standing miles away !! ? b.s ?
