15 years old Bosch PBH 160R hammer suddenly produced a lot of smoke and died. I suspected the power control switch to be faulty. Before buying a new power control switch I wanted to check whether the electromechanical parts of the hammer were OK, making replacement of the switch worthwile. I connected the motor leads to a variac and inspected the interior parts of the device while increasing power. Everything seemed OK. With a new power control switch, still available after 15 years, the hammer functioned like new.
