-continued- Mandatory Minimum sentencing for possession of certain drugs assures that our prisons will be packed with people that would be better served, and less expensive to society, in supervised probation/parole. We REALLY need to hire more Parole Officers to do the job effectively. Each Parole Officer hired would allow release of a dozen or more inmates. PO's pay for themselves if used effectively.

It's too easy to label all inmates as "animals". While behind bars inmates all have to be hard and not show weakness just to survive day to day. That gives an honest impression that most appear "dangerous". Truth is, a LOT of guys in due to the war on drugs probably shouldn't even be there in the first place and could be released with very low risk to society.
