All throughout my childhood I was taught that the reason trees lose their leaves in autumn was due to the ground freezing, or not enough water, or something along those lines. Then, in October of 2011, I witnessed another (possibly more important) reason. We had about 8 inches of snow when the trees were still fully leaved. About 1 in 10 trees suffered significant damage as the buildup of snow was snapping limbs all over the place.

In short: The tree is pulling Magnesium (core atom of Chlorophyll) our of the leaves, causing the Chlorophyll to break down and revealing the carotinoids.
