Tsunami hits South Pacific islands

Hello! I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI top news headline on this Monday, April 2, 2007.

At least 15 people are dead today after a tsunami and two earthquakes hit the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. The quake measured 9.0 on the Richter scale. A government spokesman says the cost of damage is in the millions of dollars. Solomon Islands prime minister says it's fortunate the tsunami hit in daylight hours when the early warning sign of the sea rapidly receding was noticed.

Iran is announcing that each of those 15 captured British sailors has confessed to trespassing into Iranian waters. A Tehran-based TV channel aired clips of two of the sailors showing where they were seized from maps. The group was taken into custody last month when they were inspecting an Indian-registered ship as part of an anti-smuggling operation. Britain claims the crew was in Iraqi waters but Iran insists they were in its territory. In the broadcast, one of the sailors said they were being treated very well.

Fighting in Mogadishu has created a mass exodus. At least 50 thousand people have fled Somalia's capital as Islamist rebels battle Somali and Ethiopian soldiers. The fighting has escalated in the past two weeks. The Red Cross says it's the worst the city has seen in 15 years. The United Nations says refugees are living in dire conditions with no access to safe water or food.

It's a fresh beginning for the Amish in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania. A new one-room schoolhouse opened today for Amish children in that area. It replaces a school that was rampaged by a milk truck driver last year. That man shot 10 girls inside, then committed suicide as police closed in. The new school sits a few hundred yards from the spot where the killings happened. It's protected by more sophisticated locks on the doors and is reachable only by a private drive.
