This is the intro to the original version of the sequel of Metal Gear, on the MSX homecomputer. The original game was in Japanese and never officially released onto the European and North-American markets until it was bundled in 2005 with Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. The game you see here is a fan translation to English.

The year is 1999. Solid Snake is back to save the world from grave danger when he has to enter rogue nation Zanzibar Land to retrieve a kidnapped scientist who just invented a solution to the looming oil crisis: Oilix, a bio-engineered algae that produces high-grade oil.

According to this intro, Zanzibar Land has also raided several storage plants for nuclear weapons taken out of service, making it now the only effective nuclear armed power in the world.

I find this latter scenario hard to believe, but OK, it is a game. It is unfortunate, though, that Hideo Kojima - the inventor of the Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid franchises - does not touch on this not unimportant fragment of history in the games that followed: Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2.

You'll notice that in this intro, and in the game throughout, some unfamiliar faces appear. Actually, they might look a lot like real-life actors. Kojima is known for his love of Hollywood movies and this becomes more and more apparent as you progress the game.

The portraits of in-game characters were replaced in the re-release of this game that came with Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence.

Everything you want to know about this game can be read here: (contains spoilers) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Gear_2:_Solid_Snake

  • @EviLotus01

You should be asking "Why does Snake look like Van Damme and Eastwood's baby in Metal Gear Solid?", since this came first.
