This clip is from a live student concert performance of the Steve Morse song "On The Pipe" recorded in 1985 at GIT (MI) in Hollywood CA. Jimmy Herring is featured in this clip. Todd Barth (guitar), Rick Nash (Bass) and Steven Gallagher (drums) are the supporting musicians. The clip was made from a 22 year old VHS tape so the video is very grainy. Fortunately the audio is mostly intact and shows Jimmy's amazing playing even in his 20s.

  • Excuse me.. but Jimmy Herring has made Steve Morse look/ sound like an elemtary player.

    Your Welcome : )

  • Well, I don't know about that. Steve is an amazing guitarist and composer. That being said, I have heard live versions of Steve playing that song that didn't sound as good as Jimmy. Jimmy had most of the album "The Introduction" figured out note for note within a week of its release. Pretty amazing.

  • who wrote it? can you play it?

  • Steve Morse wrote the piece that is in the clip.

  • @gtrcoach PS- Don't get me wrong: I LOVE Jimmy Herring. I just think Steve Morse has a higher degree of talent and truly exhibited it earlier in his life. Steve was always Steve without Jimmy... the same CANNOT be said the other way around!

  • @gtrcoach ...if age is a factor, it should also be noted that Jimmy is about 23 in this video- still in school and still parroting someone else's music. At 20 years old, Steve Morse was done parroting others, graduated from the University of Miami, composed and recorded "The Great Spectacular" LP (which included songs like Ice Cakes, Refried Funky Chicken, Country House Shuffle, Wages of Weirdness, Leprechaun Promenade, What If, etc) and was about a year away from being signed to a major label.

  • There were lots of kids at GIT in 1984/1985 practicing hours each day that couldn't pull that off. So I disagree that "anyone with hundreds of hours" can do that. You also have to remember that Jimmy was in his early to mid 20s when that video was shot. He wasn't trying to show off his originality. He was showing that he could duplicate a Steve Morse song as well anyone. Jimmy has his own unique style now. Its evolved quite a bit from that 26 year old clip.

  • @FyodorMDostoyevskys Seen Morse ten times, thats his material!!! Anybody with hundreds of hours into note for noting someone else's songs can do it.Like to hear his own creativity, not like parrot playing.Music about you!your signature,style.... period!!! Just my personal view on things.Last,,Morse is the most rounded, versatile player on the planet. That explains why hes in the gallery of greats!

  • hell yeah, if anyone knows any links to any other OLD herring videos i would be very appreciative

  • @swamirob Just opened for Jimmy last night in Lancaster PA!!! I have been a huge since ARU. Unbelievably one of a kind... As far as Jimmy covering a Steve Morse tune: If he's truly playing it note for note.... that would sound ridiculous to say Jimmy played it better. None of the less, two guitar gods! This is a treat thanks for posting!

  • @swamirob .... sorry bub, there's not a guitar player on the planet that can make Steve Morse look like an elementary player. You doubt it? Ask Jimmy Herring! He would laugh at your petty foolishness. And it's all about "standing on the backs of giants" in every human endeavor. You can tell just by watching this video that Jimmy was standing on Steve's back for a good long time!! He even built his guitar exactly like Steve's. So, nice try.

  • That's pretty much note for note! Great song and if you can play Steve Morse pretty much note for note, you've got some technical skills.

  • Very interesting post, cool stuff. Jimmy totally smokes, I could listen to him play Steve Morse music all day. Let's not lose sight of the fact that he is playing a Morse song, on a guitar clearly inspired by Steve's early Tele, and even seems to be doing the Morse trick of bringing the delay in with a volume pedal. Awesome player and performance, but he's immitating. Steve was the creative force behind this .
