I contacted the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation for clarification , and their response to me was as follows:

"Only if the belt is tied with a doble knot and used only with one hand"

lucky i am competing in America and the rules are that any part of a GI is legal until the ref takes the belt or GI top and removes it from the mat. plus i don't do Brazilian ju-jitsu i do Cuban ju-jitsu.

Actually, most tournaments that I have been in would call that illegal too. It's got nothing to be with being in America and the rules here certainly don't always allow that. That being said, if the rules of this competition allowed for it and they weren't following IBJJF, then it's all good.

First of all, its Jiu-Jitsu.. not Ju-Jitsu.. There is no such thing as Cuban Jiu-Jitsu.. its Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu no matter what country you're from or what country in when you're doing it.. Second of all this is totally illegal.. Idk what competition this was but I'm hoping it was IBJJF because that would be one retarded ref.. you can use a belt to choke an opponent so long as your belt is TIED TO YOU.. once it is taken off it is out of play..
