Had Channel 4 been in existence during the ITV strike of 1979, this is how the channel would have been able to function; firstly, the testcard with the whole of Superstar and then a rendition of Yellow River from the BBC2 tape If I Were A Carpenter, followed by an announcement and then a rundown of the evening's programmes and then a news summary followed by an announcement of the forthcoming weather situation and then an announcement into Fantasy Island. Enjoy!!!!

  • Slight thing, would Channel 4 have even had the manpower and ability to broadcast during the strike? Or would they have done what Channel did, and show what they had available.

  • Channel 4's unitary signal had always been carried by the ITV companies as they used to sell the advertising on Channel 4 and S4C Wales; in the case of an industrial dispute either the engineers at the IBA's Engineering Division or British Telecom would send the signal to the transmitters, but I would imagine that the independent production companies would have shown their material on Channel 4 but ITN would have been unable to show Channel 4 News; hence this news summary was shown instead.

  • I really enjoy watching your clips and i like your annoucing work on all four terrestrial tv stations,

Every thought of doing any annoucing on the earlier Channel 5 tv station, it would be nice to have clips of Channel 5 on your site and you could do clips with the IBA ETP 1 Testcard and open to following programme, lets say family Affairs.

    Keep up the good work.

  • Don't worry - I am thinking at the moment about what to do about Channel 5 but the difficulty is that when it started it didn't really have any complementary networks for it, and also the IBA weren't in existence for Channel 5 to use their ETP-1 testcard; Channel 4 and S4C weren't using it at this stage as they had gone 24-hour by this point and also Channel 5 transmitters were controlled by NTL so I don't think that a NTL:CH5 would have been used but I have designed a PM5544 for that purpose.

  • This is highly misleading - you should put "mock" in the title. Do YouTube and Channel 4 approve of this sort of thing? I'm researching 1980s TV and this very nearly led me astray!

  • ok - now i got it. Probably worth putting "mock" in the title!

  • @Murgatroyd1960s It already has with me. I'm doing something for uni and this has lead me astray. So that's a weeks worth of work in the bin. Mr Williams please lable your vids as mock otherwise you will confuse others.

  • A fellow Aspie I think. :)

  • Is this Manheim Steamroller?

  • God does this a prize for the most annoying voice on youtube

  • @rexeljetsmocks

heh, It reminded me of the intro to Knightmare

  • 5:25

Did the TV dispute get spoofed.

  • 14th August 1979 was Tuesday, not Thursday.

  • @cwilliams1976 completely bonkers. Channel 4 *could* have aired? Well, if I were the director of the BBC I *could* restore the UK Theme to radio 4.... or then again I *might* not. Who knows?! I mean this is completely bonkers.

  • We all know Channel 4 wasn't on air in 1979, but you really need to label your videos as mock. You really must have a lot of spare time on your hands.

  • hmm, why do I think of CTV when I hear the music at the beginning. I wonder.
