The combination of all these changes has changed the way racing at the three best tracks in NASCAR play out. Until NASCAR can figure out a way to allow each manufacturer to have a style like they used to and allow the cars to look more like a show room model while not giving a distinct advantage to one team or another then I'm afraid the racing at Bristol, Talladega, and Daytona are forever changed. For better or worse? Well that's up to each individual fan's liking, for me it's the worse.

"We had the COT before Bristol was repaved and before Daytona was repaved so why were they different then then they are now?" Well it's simple, even though the COT has been a main fixture in Cup racing over the past four years and three FULL years the COT we have now is completely different than the one introduced in 2007. The nose has been adjusted and the splitter has changed from what it used to be as well as the wing when the COT was introduced compared to the spoiler it has on there now.

Allowing two or three wide at Bristol with the way each manufacturer had such a distinct aero advantage from each other would mean that every car would handle different, be going different speeds, etc and combining that with the new banking at Bristol we would see races there like we have never seen before. The moment that the COT came out and evened up every team was the moment that Bristol racing was officially destroyed.

Dr. Punch went on to tell me that because of the advent of the COT more and more teams/cars/drivers have cars that are more equal now than we have ever seen before, and I would think most people would agree to that if they watch just any NASCAR Sprint Cup race these days. He said that the progressive banking would make for much more exciting racing at Bristol if the cars were more like they were five years or so ago.

Dr Jerry punch from espn comes on a local sports radio show here in Knoxville tn every Monday and I asked him this week if the progressive banking was the culprit for the bad racing we have seen at Bristol lately. His answer was simple...NO. he said the main talk between all drivers (according to him) is the new car the COT. Same as with the main reason daytona and talladega suck now is because of the way the COT drives in the draft not because of the recent repavings.
