As I was making my afternoon walk this Thursday, May 26, 2011, on Big Pine Key, FL, I came upon this Key deer picking something up in the road, and when I got closer, I realized that it was a dead mourning dove. Then, the deer began to eat it! Sorry if the video is a little shaky, but I was walking my dog Sammy, who kept pulling at my left arm, and I had my 4-lb. Greenwing Macaw, Goliath, on my other arm.
Wow!

Wow. And maybe needing moisture in this drought along with minerals? But then should we be surprised at these poor creatures eating just about anything since they have learned to eat cat food, hot dogs, and cheese puffs? Down here with these horrid people who feed wild animals, I can't avoid placing blame on people. These wonderful and rare critters suffer from digestive disorders with the nutcases running rampant harming them (killing with kindness, even when not deliberately trying to harm).

I've seen northern deer doing the same thing. I read it was suspected that they needed the calcium and trace elements....go figure.
