Episode 1 - The Colour of Money: Colonialism and the Slave Trade.

Reaching back across the centuries, this program sheds light on historical attitudes toward human differences. It assesses the significance of Biblical narratives, including the curse of Ham, in the evolution of European concepts of race, and goes on to examine the basis of institutionalized racism—entwined with fervent capitalism—on which the transatlantic slave trade operated. The destruction of Americas indigenous civilizations and the dehumanization and exploitation of Africans are studied alongside the writings of Enlightenment philosophers and historians. Experts interviewed include Dr. Orlando Patterson of Harvard University, Dr. Barnor Hesse of Northwestern, and Professor James Walvin of the University of York.

  • correction: "describes the Spaniards as fanatics and killers."

  • Look up the "Black legend", it descibes the Spaniards are fanatics and killers. They commited many atrocities in Flanders and elsewhere in Europe, not only against non-Europeans.

  • @joakinojp157 generally speaking, europe was already quite wealthy before the colonizing started... they managed to colonize the world because of their wealth.. also, that was only western & southern european nations, not the rest of europe. and don't pretend like there were no wars and atrocities among the earlier civilisations in your own brazil, or that they wouldn't have ventured outside of south america if they had the means, with similar disastrous results.

  • you people are borderline retarded

  • @hector0282 europeans are cucasian...meaning dead asians who broke away from the human family are dead to the rest....and thats how whites are in majority they dont care about others of different cultures unless they can use them.....this will end soon

  • @robto It has nothing to do with the fact that hI hate white people. I don't. I reject the concept of race altogether. It's about the simple fact that the winner takes it all. And the Europeans were the winners and all the other peoples were the losers.

  • @ralvarez15 Of course racism as a sentiment or as an emotional reaction it's universal among all human beings. However racism as a polticial ideology and as a social indicator to legitimize rule was invented by the colonial European powers. Indians created the caste system to legitimize their rule, Africans used slavery and sorcery to legitimize their power, and Europeans used racism. It was Europe that succesfully colonized the entire world, not the opposite. (continue)

  • @joakinojp157 Get over it. The past is the past. At the end of the day people like you are complaining over nothing.

  • @robto No that was a system invented by ALL HUMANS OF ALL COLORS. Not just europeans. Racism comes in all colors and if you deny that then you are a fool obviously. Stop using what happened in the past as an excuse for your racism towards white people.

  • @MoralInvasion THANK YOU!!! Don't let people put you down simply because of what happened in the past. People say you should feel bad because you are white?:/ That is ignorant with a capital I. Even though I think history IS important, at the same time we should look forward and stop blaming others. Racism is a HUMAN problem. Not a European problem.
