http://www.ideasproject.com/ Media analyst Sam Whitmore points to geolocation as the most exciting and disruptive force in technology today. With leading technology companies like Facebook, Google and others moving rapidly to implement geolocation services, Whitmore believes that while we'll one day encounter consequences such as insurance liability, the benefits of this exciting technology will still outweigh them.
Geolocation, number one, by far, the most exciting and potentially disruptive technological force that there is right now. Facebook, Google, Gowalla, Foursquare, all these technology companies are hurdling toward implementing the core geolocation service, and then all the ancillary marketing and communication services surrounding it, but then you've got this other very powerful incumbent industry, the insurance industry, that's going to find a way to say, "Hey, I'm not paying your claim. Sorry you got broken into but it's tantamount to leaving your door unlocked," and in most insurance policies, there is a clause that has like minimum requirement for securing. If it can be proven that you left all your doors and windows open, and you left your house drunk, they're not going to pay your claim. So, I think the disruption is going to be, and I think geolocation is a good example of all these exciting new capabilities but they have unintended consequences.
