Once again my attempt to heighten awareness of the talents of a great singer/songwriter...CTW. Also to bring enjoyment and some measure of pleasure to long standing fans and admirers of CTW's work and enduring legacy.
This is a particularly poignant and melancholic song composed I feel with great sincerity and feeling...I hope my personal efforts in some way come close to doing it justice. This is also esp dedicated to my friend Cass once more who brought this song back into my consciousness..deeply endebted.

Never forget the past and live within the present with an eye to the future!
Pax to all my friends...enjoy.

A DAY TO MYSELF
***************

It's all so different now
From just a few weeks ago
When April was about to smile on England
And I had to go

So here I am again
Far from where the blackbird sings
And lanes I love to walk along
Lost i my thoughts
And what of you my love
Though you're so far away
Yet so close to me in all I do and see

And so on my day off
I could have chosen monuments
Historic chateau,palaces
Or finding ways of improving my French
Instead I wandered out alone
Here where woods and fields abound
And in a quiet corner found the resting place
Of English soldiers killed in war

And what of them my love
Who died so far from home
No last farewell kiss
All that remains is this

It makes me feel so ashamed to feel alone
Whatever would they think of me
For I shall see my love again

It's all so different now
From those few years ago
When April smiled so sweetly still
And they had to go

  • Thank you so much for this. It's outstandingly beautiful and poignant and typical of CTW's thoughtfulness, emotional intelligence and amazing musicianship.

You do have to take credit, Scalpsie, for putting these songs and images together with such sensitivity. Thanks so much.

Just a thought- the comments are from all over the world and we're all pretty well united, I'd say. Hope springs eternal...pax vobiscum always. Carol x

  • He was a special talent and he died far too young. Many people find his songs uncomfortably sentimental, others are put off by his distinctive singing voice. I think he is up there with very best, and that includes Elton John and post-Beatles Paul McCartney. Reading comments on YouTube, it would appear that even hard-nosed Pink Floyd fans are getting CRW. That can't be a bad thing. My blog has links to your wonderful videos - scalpsie

  • One of those songs I'd forgotten about, how unjust is that? Thanks for uploading it, its right on the button lyrically and tremendous to listen to. Very moving. CTW was an amazing Singer Songwriter, undervalued in my opinion. Its time I think to update my playlists.. Many Many Thanks

  • Great talent, much missed. Lovely song. Thanks for posting.

  • Came across this today. beautiful! I remember hearing it in a tape player in a car {remember those?] when on a weekend trip with friends back in 1980. We were visiting the Waterloo battle field south of Brussels and later the WW1 somme area. It moved me then and moves me now. It was also April when we were there camping, 3 years before I was married. It made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck hearing it then and now. Can't drive past a Commonealth war grave - seems irreverant.

  • @atmj65 Many thank sof rviewing and commenting - thank you.Peace in all you do
