Stanley Clarke & Jean-Luc Ponty play Charlie Parker's bebop classic "Confirmation" on bass and violin during Rite of Strings concert. I apologize for the video coming in and out because I was trying not to let the light from my camera be seen by the ushers. The audio is perfect, but the video goes in and out.

  • Thanks for sneaking in a little bit of the show other than the music. Lucky that you did not get caught. In Montreal I heard Keith Jarrett rant and rave at a flash photographer. I really don't think that either Ponty or Clarke would have given you such a long & nasty blasphemous screaming lecture as Jarrett did, but still, ushers can do uncool things too It put me off Jarrett for life. I've never listened to him since then, 2006. Flash photography is wrong, but emerging Mr Hyde was ghastlier.

  • @NovaScotiaChick That Jarrett story is crazy! Not sure about Ponty, but I met Stanley at a concert a year before this and he was extremely friendly, so I don't think he'd yell for seeing flashes. An usher did almost take away my camera earlier in the concert, so that's why I had the lens pointed down on my lap in this video and couldn't focus on the stage (Stay away from older cameras with displays that are really bright!)

  • of course it wasn't meant to be played on violin. jazz violin is an acquired taste that not every one will like, but i think Ponty's got some very cool melodic ideas going on.

  • Thank you, stealth videographer! I needed this. Very cool to hear his bowing/ phrasing/ tone production. I learning this now- don't see that Ponty recorded it elsewhere.

  • none of you guys have thought of clark! he's playing, and jean luc has beening playing like that for fourty yrs. so It takes time to phrase in the way you hear him now. the tune is a staple in the music world and should studies on all instr. how high the moon , and giant steps. tim

  • Dude, this is maaaadness, did you hear that at 1:04?! Thats so cool, ponty and his false harmonics badassery. And then he does bebop phrases but with all these seperate bows, so different from conventional charlie parker phrasing, but so awesome.

Hey I play jazz violin too, a good parker tune you can start thats easier is yardbird suite. Also always in bebop, slur on the upbeat, that is start downbow and then just slur two per bow after the downbow, on the up bow.

  • awseome! i tried playing confirmation on the violin, but like all the other charlie parker songs, it was difficult to play!

  • i liked it. i for one play, and like jazz violin. you should definitely check out john blake, a violinist from philadelphia. i did a very similar video myself, but not anywhere as good as this ;-)
