RoboBrrd is made out of pencils and popsicle sticks to form a sturdy and fixable chassis. When popsicle sticks break, just replace them! We also poke holes in the popsicle sticks to use in the beak mechanism.
Really hope that you enjoy this video! YAY!

Another good readily available material to investigate - and you get conductivity, too, if you want it, once you get rid of the plastic inner coating - would be aluminum soda/beer cans. Strong, extremely common (and you can get more by working late and supplementing your work with caffeinated beverages), can be worked without too much trouble, and some duct tape can attach multiple pieces together.

Bottles are sort of iffy because of the $0.05 tax refund... but if you get ones that aren't eligible then that's pretty cool! They are definitely a good source of conductivity. There was also a really cool video posted on makezine blog about cutting a glass bottle, which is cool too. CDs and bottle caps are also great materials to use!

Nice work. I really like to see creative repurposing of everyday materials. I teach a Makers class at our school where the kids have been amazed at how many uses we have found for bendy straws, and other common materials.

Bendy straws are so much fun! It would be interesting to see what sensors could be made if they were coated in conductive paint / tinfoil. Thanks for the comment!

Ah, didn't think of that. (I live in a state where there's no bottle/can deposit.) Still, those materials are at least readily available...

Yeah, but when a Chinese laser costs as much as a good used car, other prototyping methods are more cost effective for many people. ;)

Ah! I forgot about laser cutters in that one footnote! Thanks! The only tools you need for this is a poking stick, and some scissors and stuff like that :)!

Nicely refreshing! I'm tired of seeing builds where the maker uses their CNC mill, laser cutter, and other high end tools 99% of us do NOT have. Well done!
