«Open Signal: Paulinho da Viola, his name. He´s the author (composition and lyrics) to this MPB pearl. Chico Buarque also recorded the song and she appears on one of his albums entitled "Closed Signal", edited in 1974. I am a big fan of Paulinho (and Chico). Paulinho da Viola first revealed himself in Samba and he is son to a guitar player. He is an intellectual with the soul of Samba dancer and, many people did not know it (or him) until he composed "Closed Signal".
Some of the great and authentic "Sambistas" will unfortunately be forgotten, but Paulinho, who has studied and put on a jacket and tie, never will.
The signal is open for him, thank God. The signal was always green to Chico's talent but his (Chico) story is different: he is member to a family of intellectuals.»

«Sinal aberto: Paulinho da Viola é o nome dele. É dele mesmo a autoria (música e letra) desta pérola da MPB. Chico Buarque gravou esta composição, que aparece num álbum seu com o título "Sinal Fechado" editado em 1974.
Sou fã do Paulinho (e do Chico também). Paulinho da Viola, revelado nas rodas de samba, tornou-se um compositor dos mais refinados da MPB, embora mantenha-se fiel às suas origens como membro mais novo da Velha Guarda da Escola de Samba Portela, ele que é filho de um violonista. Paulinho é um intelectual com alma de sambista. Muita gente não sabia disso, até que ele compôs "Sinal Fechado". Alguns dos grandes sambistas autênticos serão esquecidos infelizmente, mas Paulinho, que estudou e vestiu paletó e gravata, jamais. O sinal está aberto para ele, graças a Deus. O sinal sempre esteve verde para o talento do Chico, mas sua história é diferente: ele é membro de uma família de intelectuais.»
