I'm amazed the Chinese govt LET Sonic Youth play there. And, yes, Kim & the gang realize that China is FAR more oppressive than the US for women (and anyone) -- that's why this is so perfect!

American punk band ranting about Bush while on a stage in China, all the kids cheering...ah it makes so much sense! Nothing bad to say about President Hu, CCP, corruption, human rights, Tibet, Tiananmen 89, kicking people out of their homes in very city the gig was played for the f#$king Olympic games, etc etc ad naseum? No? Fuck Bush, huh...Wow, Punk Rock!

You make a good point ridhug, and the same thought crossed my mind. Either they didn't have anything intelligent to say about any of those things, or they thought it wasn't an American band's place to criticise China; that's something for Chinese people to do. Or a combination.
