The thing is, Islam is a religion, not a nationality. There are loads of Muslims of every nationality, including English, with English passports. So, do you believe that if your friend had a UK passport & was Muslim he could stay? I seriously doubt it.

Maybe if your friend was a refugee from a Muslim nation he could stay indefinitely... maybe not. I'm sure it would be a matter of determination by an immigration officer.
