Dutch television and radio journalist Babette Niemel in conversation with Beena Sarwar, Pakistani journalist, artist and filmmaker at Kuch Khaas. talking about their friendship since 1988, the media, and other matters.
Babette Niemel has been to Pakistan several times since her first visit in 1988, when she was based in Lahore for six months doing a series of weekly radio shows for Dutch Radio (VPRO). She and her co-producer traveled all over Pakistan for that series, finding stories to enable the audience in Holland to understand what Pakistan was about since Benazir Bhutto took oath as the world's first Muslim woman Prime Minister.
"It was a love that steadily grew," she says, recalling how she found herself defending Pakistan in Holland after her return, and many times since then. As a journalist, she feels a responsibility to project the nuances of the Pakistan that she has encountered and experienced through her travels in this contradictory country.
Beena Sarwar is a journalist and documentary filmmaker who has held senior editorial positions at various publications in Pakistan besides being part of Geo TV's launch team in 2002. After obtaining a Masters in Television Documentary from Goldsmiths College, University of London (2001), has produced and directed several documentaries and news reports. She is currently Editor, Aman ki Asha, Jang Group Pakistan.
