Zoos claim to educate people and preserve species, but they usually fall short on both counts.

Most zoo enclosures are very small, and rather than promoting respect or understanding of animals, signs often provide little more information than an animal’s species, diet, and natural range.

Animals’ normal behavior is seldom discussed, much less observed, because their natural needs are rarely met.

Birds’ wings may be clipped so that they cannot fly, aquatic animals are often without adequate water, and many animals who live in large herds or family groups in nature are kept alone or, at most, in pairs.

Natural hunting and mating behaviors are virtually eliminated by regulated feeding and breeding regimens.

Animals are closely confined, lack privacy, and have little opportunity for mental stimulation or physical exercise.

These conditions often result in abnormal and self-destructive behaviors or “zoochosis.”

  • just imagine the zoos of the future. i wouldn't give up on the whole zoo thing. i bet they will able to simulate a natural environment which will not stress the animals out as much. now i ask the question to everyone who thinks its cruel. if they made the zoo to the point where the animals enjoyed being there would you then be on board. when i was a kid i would stay alot longer at then 8 secs for each animal.its very sad of the effects of zoos on animals. but i can only hope its gets better

  • Studies have shown that most zoo visitors will stop and look at an animal for less than 8 seconds. So, what exactly are they learning about the animals? Also, animals tend to disappoint people. If a tiger or gorilla is sleeping, zoo-goers get bored. All they want to see are tricks and cartoon-like behavior...These animals aren't living creatures in their eyes. They are "exotic things."

  • fuck zoos. I remember a saw this beautiful bald eagle locked up in a thight space . Broke my heart . I swear , next when im in zoo , i will set some of the animals free.

  • @Gscanlo inappropriate touching of female animals....wow.

  • Unfortunately, the video doesn't cover mishandling of animals that results in their deaths eg. inadequate diet that causes digestive clots in ruminants, or overuse of anesthesia for foot care; or inappropriate touch of female animals' genitals. I witnessed the latter at the zoo in Baltimore, and the media reported the other two incidents.

  • yeah, i imagine beng in a zoo is like being in jail.

  • I Can remember when i was little, everyone else got bored as animal's slept but i sat and watched beautiful creature's such as tiger's, Polar bears and i did not get bored i love all animals :) My favourite is the penguin when my family left me at the seaworld penguin enclosement and i stood there for 2 hours watching the penguins :)

  • The human population lives in a giant zoo of captivity most are too blind to see it.

  • What humans dont realize is that we are also animals. Our souls are not worth any more than 'animal' souls.

  • the zoo is nothing more than cheap trills people get when faced with something that cannt defend it self
