This is a beautiful deep meaningful song which has sadly been forgotten by time. Over the past few years I have searched for this record. I forgot who recorded it. The stations don't play it enough. Even more sad, is that not enough has improved in our society since 1971.

Oh, My God!! I never thought I would EVER hear this song again. I had a copy of the MoWest (Motown West) 45 rpm single backk in 1977 and lost it. I never was able to find a replacement copy. From what I remember, the flip side of the single, "The Victors," was a reading of the names of U.S. soldiers killed in Vietnam.

I was 14 years old when I first heard this record on WABC radio in NYC. I loved it. I admired each of these men and still do. I have the song on a cassette tape, but would love to find the 45. I remember seeing a copy of it on RCA records in someone's house. R.I.P. Tom Clay and thank you for this recording. When TV had the One-Hit Wonders feature program, this song was left out of it.

The flip side title was "The Victors". It's not even close to being considered a song; it just consists of Tom Clay reading the names of people and their ages. The only remnant of music you hear is just the "Taps" theme being played on some kind of flute over and over. There is a video of this on YouTube (type in search bar). You will just see on a dark screen Tom Clay The Victors, but not any video of the record being played. Hope this helps. :)
Peace,

I agree with you. This is indeed one of those song titles that is very rarely heard on oldies stations nowadays. From what my mother said, this song has been played on the observance of Dr. King's birthday, the anniversary of JFK's assassination, and possibly on the anniversary of Bobby Kennedy's assassination. I listened to this record when my mom had it, and I thought it was a wonderful composition. Again, it is so sad that this song has become a "forgotten oldie" over the years.

What was the B side? Any chance you can post a video of it?

The B side was called "The Victors."
No music (I think), but a reading of the soldiers who lost their in Vietnam.
