He was accepted into Harvard because of his grades; he was smart. He went to Harvard because they gave him enough financial assistance to make it possible. He also went to a Manhattan high school that was a very good public school, in those days at least.

@danoftherepublic But what would happen after he's removed from office? The masses would vote for another demagogue who will overturn his reforms. Reagan tried to change the course, but he did a half-ass job and a leftist politician (Clinton) was voted into office again. Clinton ran on a center-left platform to get elected and then Bush ran on a centrist platform to get elected. In my opinion, there is no hope for representative democracy.

@danoftherepublic If he weren't 81 years old, I would agree.

Excellent. American and French revolutions need to be contrasted more often to illustrate why Government is not the answer, but a moral and civil society is required...

T Sowell will never be considered PC in educated circles. There are too many government sponsored funds at stake for beuaruocrats to bow down and embrace private enterprize.

I'd consider myself a loose-"Mill-ian" Libertarian. This is probably one of the best quick-critiques of him I've heard.
If only more Republicans were like Sowell, the right could have the dynamic exchange of ideas we all want.

@danoftherepublic How about his admirer Clarence Thomas? Assuming he'd be willing to go down as the first person to ever leave the Court for POTUS. Howard Taft became a SCJ after his presidency, so it's not COMPLETELY out of the realm of possibility.

@asleeperj I love Mr. Sowell's interviews, and he is very astute and intelligent. However, he possesses something far more valuable than "genius"... common sense!

Difference is "to the liberals who left messages here" conservatism has been around for thousands of years, liberalism has been around a mere 150years at best. Degeneration of societies great as they may have been, has been precluded by some form of liberal nonsense, that didn't work. I say lets go with what works!
Tyranny has always been the norm, until the United States came into being.

I finally found words worth listening to.
