Since late 1999, Chicago has been working to replace the old model of isolated low income residences with new, low rise, mixed income communities. The building at 1230 N. Burling (facing Halsted) has now been evacuated and closed. This was the final occupied building with in the major Cabrini-Green complex.

The white one at 1230 N. Larabee is now being torn down, and the last two reds are being prepped for demolition next.

I heard that when they went to clean out the last of the units before the demo began, they found like thousands and thousands of empty KFC buckets. They calculated that based on the number of empty KFC buckets they found, the residents spent over $2 million dollars on KFC since 2003.

@tjmady Explosives would have caused shrapnel and debris to fall on top of other occupied or otherwise used buildings, and the city and/or the demolition company didn't want liability for damage. Controlled demolitions are only used in situations where surrounding buildings and cars are more sparse. Pinpointing the important "weak points" in the steel frame of the structure can take months and is very costly and labor intensive.
