Known as the "mother of Uyghur music," the 12 Muqam has a long history. Some scholars believe its origin can be traced back to the 206BC-220AD. The Uyghur 12 Muqam is so large in scale and so complicated in rendition that no rival can be found in the world. It consists of 360 sung poetry, stories, dance tunes and instrumental sections. Some of the lyrics of the Muqam are drawn from 44 great classic poets and folk poetry, totaling 4,492 lines of words. To sing the complete Muqam takes around 24 hours.
Now it was included in UNESCO' s( United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization)list of "oral and intangible heritage of humanity".

Contemporary scholars refer to four distinct regional genres: the Twelve Muqam of the Kashgar-Yarkand region, the Turpan Muqam, the Qumul Muqam, and the Dolan Muqam.
