1997 was a year of transition on the East Coast Mainline as GNER took over the running of trains between London and The North. The very attractive BR InterCity livery was replaced by, some say, the rather less imposing Blue livery of GNER. This was a progressive process and many trains can be seen with a mixture of both. Also seen in this video is the short lived class 89 electric locomotive which was leased to GNER during the period.

  • Nice to see a Deltic without having to pull a spare loco on the back

  • Did 89001 ever go to york?

  • Just superb! Great mix of traction and liveries from every era!

Personally I have always like the GNER livery, I thought it was very elegant and understated, although I prefered the revised version with the gold writing. I was lucky enough to ride behind 89001, around 2000 I think it was. Very odd looking but characterful loco it was.

  • Absolutely priceless, some amazing footage of ex-Intercity 225's, HST's, Sir Nigel Gresley and an extremely quiet 89001! 5/5!
