Budding entrepreneurs across the Bradford district had the opportunity to find out how to kickstart a new career by becoming a franchisee at the Bradford Franchising Fair on Saturday 04 April 2009.

The event at the Abundant Life Conference Centre, Bradford, attracted more than 400 attendees, who were able to find out about the process of the starting up a franchise and the benefits to operating a franchise.

The Franchising Fair included an inspirational keynote speech by leading entrepreneur Sahar Hashemi; founder of Coffee Republic - one of the UKs best known coffee chains which is now open to franchisees. Sahar is also the author of Anyone Can Do It - a best selling a book on starting a business. Sahar, who was voted one of the 100 Most Influential Women in Britain by the Daily Mail, offered an insight into her experiences in business and offered delegates tips and advice on business success.

The exhibition showcased franchising opportunities from a variety of organisations including Medics on the Move, Esquires Coffee Houses, buy-LOCAL.net, Pinnacle Chauffeur Transport and Distribution Unlimited. Visitors had the opportunity to talk to the various companies about opportunities available to them and learn more about what setting up as a franchisee actually involves.

Councillor Adrian Naylor, Bradford Councils Executive Member for Regeneration & Economy, believes the Franchising Fair will inspire people to consider investing in a franchise. He commented: It is very reassuring for someone opening a franchised outlet to know that the franchisor has invested in building the brand and that the organisational structure is already in place to provide support. Franchising can be a great way to start a new business in the Bradford District.

We had a great turn out at the event and it was encouraging to meet so many people who are interested in setting up their own business and following their dreams.

The free event, organised by Bradford Kickstart and Business Link Yorkshire, included various seminars throughout the day which provided business start-up information and offered practical support. Delegates learned how the banks are often more willing to lend money to a prospective franchisee as they usually present lower risks than setting up a stand alone business.

Visitors were also able to get advice on access to finance and wider business support from Bradford Kickstart and Business Link advisors.

Bradford Kickstart is a 10-year enterprise support programme being delivered by Bradford Council as part of the Government-funded Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI). In less than three years, Bradford Kickstart has already helped more than 750 new businesses to begin trading in the Bradford District, while providing support to more than 2,000 existing businesses.

Business Link Yorkshire runs a series of free courses and workshops throughout Yorkshire and Humber aimed at established businesses, social enterprises, for those who have recently started up their own business and for budding entrepreneurs.
