I Cried for You . Billie Holiday 1936
This tune became Billie's biggest hit for the Brunswick recording company. Avarage sales of the Holiday recordings with Teddy Wilson would be in the 3.000 mark. However this one sold more than 15.000 78's. The Johnny Hodges saxophone solo became a sample for every saxophonist and Billie's version was just as good. One of the reason's this did so well could be in the fact that this one of the first standards she recorded. The tune had been around since 1923 and in the public mind.
Other members in the Teddy Wilson Orchestra were Harry Carney on bariton sax, Lawrence Lucie guitar, John Kirby bass and Cozy Cole drums

  • @Felix892 Aye let’s go back to living in slums and off rations. Those were the days..... good music is alive and well, it’s just that commercialised crap is mostly propagated by wealthy media moguls.

  • @Felix892 Not sure what country you live in, but here in the US thinks are full of suck these days. Wars, unemployment, people living in tent cities. Not pretty.

  • You're seeing Diana Ross because she portrayed Billie Holiday in the 1978 film "Lady sings the blues"... My favorite movie.

  • What are pictures of Diana Ross doing in this post?

  • @ladyday I believe it was "Lady Sings The Blues" =)

  • @hakeeby...I thought it was heroin!

  • The first picture is from Lady sings the Blues. Billie was very beautiful in her own right and her voice was so beautiful.

  • The first picture is not Billie though... That is Diana Ross portraying Billie in that movie(Cant Remember the name) I Hope you did that on purpose( I don't know why you would do that). If not, pay more attention while using Google image search.

  • I believe "music is life" what a great lady, she still shines,, JP (Tenacity Counts Music)

  • LOVE YOU BILLIE, RIP

  • the first pic which appears again later looks more like diana ross than billie holiday

  • @gabbledegak good for you
