The Gang of Four Rap

Written and performed by me, Declan Meagher.
I created this rap for my Modern Asia History Elective. This rap was heavily inspired by the works of Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Lyrics:

VERSE 1:
Lemme take you cross the world in a jet,
To the rice patties wet ,
A land in of struggle,
Leaders emerging from the rubble.

There's a group, well a Gang,
A certain crew with a bang,
Climbing the ladder of success,
They causin' peasants distress.

Mao was the man,
The dictating master of the era,
Won his power with the people
Winning the jap-chino Guerra.

Mao was tryna hold up his rule,
But he was walkin down the train tracks,
Built to improve the industry,
Straining and paining the prol's backs.

When Mao needed help there was nowhere else to turn,
An' so looked to his wife, Jiang Qing,
Cuz for power she was yearnin'.

So she talked to her friends
Yao, Zhang, and Wang,
They started the Chinese A-Team,
Yeah, the Four Gang.

The Gang of Four was their name,
Maintaining the power is their game,
For Mao it was such a shame,
That they every rose to fame.


VERSE 2:
They started of as lowly officers in the CCP,
Vowing "imma let no others get a head of me".

They were denounced by Enlai,
And they stifled Deng Xiaoping,
To make way for the Gang,
Lead by Jiang Qing.

To make sure they had,
The security that they needed,
They let people know,
It was to Mao whom they heeded.

In 1965 they started by censoring Wu Han,
Telling people with different politics,
To just go get a move on.

They started burning books,
And houses,
And people,
They hated intellects,
And anyone who was xeno.

When getting the job done,
Start getting hard,
They brought out the big guns,
Yeah, the Red Guard.

On to all the workers,
And people taking classes,
The Red Guard descended,
And put a whoopin on their asses.

BRIDGE:
When Mao kicked the bucket,
The Gang of Four was in control,
Needless to say this was bad news for the prols!!!

VERSE 3:
The Gang would stop at nothing,
To control the whole culture,
Like circled all the peasants,
Like a pack of angry vultures,

I guess people didn't care,
For a pack of murderers,
Who killed 5 hundred thou,
From grandmother to sheep herders,

After Mao's death,
The Gang tried to take the throne,
But there were two other guys,
Who wanted power for their own.

Their names were Deng Xiaopeng and Zhou Enlai,
And as far the peasants were concerned they were really cool guys.

But Deng was a capitalist,
And Enlai was fading fast,
The Gang of Four did their best,
To put those names in the past.


VERSE 4:
The Gang of Four, one day,
Made a horrible mistake,
They got really unpopular by bustin' up the wake,

For the peoples-man Enlai,
(That real swag character)
Set off a chain of reactions,
Like in a nuclear reactor.

So the people got pissed,
And there is no way you could've missed,
The soup of coupes waitin' to ally-oop,
While the peasants booed and hissed.

The Gang got scared,
Fled to the Great Hall of the Peeps,
When they got trapped,
CCP was rollin' deep!

(WE COULD'VE HAD IT ALL!)

Incarcerated! They had to conform to the demand,
Of people Who spat on their names across the land.

They were facing extermination,
Or serious life in jail,
There was never one gang to make destruction on this scale.

There name lives in infamy,
Killing, destruction, and more.
They controlled the Cultural Revolution.
