Sitting on Top of the World performed bluegrass-style by the Abbott family in the key of G, then broken down and analysed by Luke and Kyle Abbott.

This is the most "modern" of our Core Songs (coming from as recent as 1930). Despite its youth, however, Sitting on Top of the World has fully entered the oral tradition, with dozens of variants evolving over the years. Our focus in this episode is on the common bluegrass-style version, though we also take a moment to listen to the original recording of the song by the Mississippi Sheiks.

  • You can also add a G7 in between the G and C instead of doing 4 measures of G then 2 measures of C do 2 measures of G then 2 measures of G7 then 2 measures of C

  • @islandkid13yahoo Indeed. Seventh chords (i.e., G7) can be a nice way to transition to a 4 chord, or from a 4 chord or 5 chord back to a 1 chord. Or a 2 chord up to a 5 chord.

Most important to keep in mind, however, is that seventh chords are merely embellishments which can be added to the chord structure, not an integral part of it. One should always think about the basic chord structure first, then add sevenths if they like...but they're just icing on the cake.

  • I've never realized this, but this song, at least that original cut you played is practically identical to Come on in my Kitchen by Robert Johnson. I guess it was a standard back then, but the speed on the record and the key and emphasis is identical. Good to hear. You guys are great, keep playing. Love from England.
