I don't know if I'm 100 percent right but in the 80's and early 90's the goalies still used the stand-up style instead of the butterfly style like today and they worked their game off the first shot, the further you're out the more you cut off the angle for the shot and they would back up to prepare for the deak. Hope that helped a little.
I'm pretty sure that the idea was that coming so far out of the net cut down the angle for the shooter. Or in other words, because the goalie was farther out the guy with the puck couldn't see the net behind him. They don't do this much any more because it was much easier to get beaten by a pass or a deke.
Gretzky would probably get about 200 goals in his career if he played in today's nhl
