The Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy is 10,000 times smaller in mass than the Milky Way, so it is getting stretched out, torn apart and gobbled up by the bigger Milky Way.
Excelllent comments below from Redgsr, Fetch and Arata. The badastronomy articles they reference are must-reads to dispel the myths that the Sun is from the sag dwarf galaxy. It is not.
We are not exactly in the middle. Most of the stars of the Sagittarius stellar stream are far from us, but still _some_ stars _may_ be passing in our neighborhood, given some conditions on the precise geometry of the stream relative to us.
Space is EXTREMELY diffuse. The distances between stars are HUGE. There is practically no chance of any stars from either galaxy colliding with each other.
Hi, I'm just curious.. Why haven't we been destroyed?
I'm not sure which galaxy we are from, and I had no idea that the milkyway is actually in the process of merging with another galaxy, until I watched this video. It just amazes me that we are still even here. I had the whole mindset that when our galaxy colides with another, we would be destoryed. How long has this been going on, and where can I read about it? Thanks
Cool - I knew this was the case (seen pictures before) but I couldn't convince an astronomy-interested friend about this fact.. I had forgotten the name of the dwarf galaxy :P

Actually no, that's yet another hoax. :D

There is no reason for us to be aligned with the disk of the Milky Way.
Moreover, astronomers routinely find extrasolar planets with random orientations, so it's a non-issue.

@ArataMusic1 Actually, Sol is part of the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy.
That's why our solar system is perpendicular to the Milky Way.

Since we are in the middle of the stream right now, is it possible that some stars in our sky are from saggitarius?
