Two local Newport Beach yacht clubs The Balboa YC and the Bahia Corinthian YC are racing against each other on two tall ships, the Brigantines "Exy Johnson" and the "Irving Johnson" off the Orange Coast. The two 113 foot vessels are part of the Top Sail program of the Los Angeles Maritime Institute and are usually sailed by local kids in their youth programs. The event is also a fundraiser for the program. The American legion Yacht Club of Newport Beach organized the event as an attraction for their annual Wooden Boat festival the day before.
Named for sail training pioneers Irving and Electa "Exy" Johnson, the brigantines take on a proud history initiated by their namesakes. Seven time veteran circumnavigators of the world on board two different boats both named Yankee, each trip with a new crew of boys and girls armed only with a sense of adventure and curiosity. For 25 years beginning in the late 1930s, Irving and Exy did what was thought impossible, and lived a life now legendary.
Fair ships, both! You need to bring them up to SFO and do a summer race out to the Farallones and back. No offense, but that race looked like a walk in the park. I think the idea of bringing the kids aboard was terrific. Good on you all.
