Club Desafio is a prevention program run at schools (in Santa Barbara, Honduras) by teachers, who volunteer to work with at risk students so they do not fall into dangerous gangs, initiate drug use, or become infected with HIV. Teachers receive training, prevention material, videos, manuals, T-shirts and drug testing kits. They also receive funding for fieldtrips, and food for club meetings. The teachers meet with Desafio members once a week throughout the school year. The groups meet from February to October.
Students receive education on how to avoid falling into risky behavior such as drug use and getting infected with a sexually transmitted disease. Students also receive information about anger management, conflict resolution, refusal skills, self-esteem, decision making and moral values. Individual counseling is also provided. The teachers as mentors model positive behavior, provide parent conferences, individual counseling and have students participate in community service activities.
