11/15/2011 Jeykundo has now suffered a second deadly quake- -but this one was not an act of nature, but rather it was caused by human design!
As the Chinese government rebuilt the region, it was vitally important that TIbetan culture and values be retained and guide the government's rebuilding efforts, but instead China has constructed a modern Chinese city following a policy aimed at annihilating TIbetan identity and way of life.

IN this video you will "meet" local Tibetans who traveled from all over the region for the annual summer festival and horse races in 2005. The vast plain, known for the festival and celebrated horse races, was used to provide temporary shelter for survivors of the earthquake.

"The 4/10 earthquake was utterly devastating.
But since the Chinese government began reconstruction a year and a half ago, China's reconstruction policy has been designed to destroy this predominately Tibetan area in Kham, Eastern Tibet- - a region long recognized as a cradle of Tibetan culture, religion and customs.

OCT.2010.-News from world's front pages gone, but survivors' needs increase lacking basic necessities as winter approaches:warm clothing, blankets, fuel for cooking etc. Those who have remained are living on meager food supplies and are drinking water from unsafe sources.
No amount donated is too small. For every dollar you will be able to provide a bowl of warm meal, a bottle of clean water or something to keep them warm

JUNE2010-JYEKUNDO, POST EARTHQUAKE-is now the blue city, as Khenpo calls it, due to the thousands of government issued tents. All of the population still living in the city are residing in tents.
Razing of residential neighborhood in Jyekundo is underway, with many buildings already completely cleared away. The Surmang team are bringing another 15,000 pounds of barley flour from Xining into Jyekundo this week. Additionally, some families that did not previously receive financial aid, including one extended family that lost 13 people in the earthquake, have recently been given financial support.
Reports about the rebuilding plans for Jyekundo continue to shift week by week. Some residents will have to give up their present home sites and relocate to a different part of Jyekundo because of plans for road widening, and for a new park and market. News reports indicate that many residents were upset due to fear that their home sites would be taken for government buildings; it is unclear so far as to whether or not that will actually happen. The manner in which residential homes will be rebuilt is not yet clear either, with concern expressed about reported plans to build very small (800 square foot) houses for large Tibetan families. Even those families who have somewhere else to go are trying to keep some family members in the city to keep track of the rebuilding situation.

JUNE 2nd marked the 49th DAY since the devastating earthquake struck the Jyekundo area in eastern Tibet. On that day, Lamas, Nuns and laypeople in Tibet, in Dharamsala,India and in other parts of the world chanted special Buddhist prayers for the more than 2,500 people who died.
In this remote mountainous region at 14,000ft.,approx. 98% of the people are Tibetans living and working mostly as farmers, herders, nomads. Daily life is deeply connected to the land, environment, and the many Buddhist Monasteries that surrounded the area.
85% of Jyekundo was destroyed.
More than 2,500 people reported dead. Tens of thousands of survivors remained in shock and in need of shelter, food, water and medical supplies.

The 4/10 earthquake in Yushu (Jeykundo in Tib.) was devastating, but China's reconstruction policy has been criminal!

It's was intent on destroying the predominately Tibetan region in Kham, a cradle of Tibetan culture, religion and customs.

One and a half yrs later,Jeykundo suffers from an even deadlier quake-- China's constructing a modern day Chinese city, and thus wiping out the TIbetan way of life.

  • On May 20, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution regarding the April 14 earthquake in the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province, China (Tibetan region of Kham). The resolution, which encouraged the Chinese government to include Tibetans in reconstruction, characterizes the area as a cradle of Tibetan culture. It was approved by voice vote

June 2nd will mark the 49th day since the earthquake, an important day for prayers offered by Buddhist monks, nuns, and lay people for all those who perished in the earthquake. You can help honor those who died and those who are still suffering by lighting a candle and by making a donation to one of the many NGO's aiding the people of Jyekundo
