More than four thousand people gathered on October 23rd, 2009 to celebrate the 49th anniversary of the Tibetan Childrens Village or TCV in Dharamsala, India. The celebration included many festivities for the school children and community members such as the presentation of student awards, performances by student groups, Tibetan songs and dances, and a TCV singing contest.
As an integrated school and community, TCV educates nearly 17 thousands students ranging from primary to high school level, and the school continues to grow as hundreds of children escape from Tibet every year.
His Eminence the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Rinpoche, leader of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, joined in on the celebration and addressed the crowd. He spoke of the vital need to preserve Tibetan culture, language and religion in order to continue the fight for Tibetan justice and societal progression. Other prominent attendees include Deputy speaker of the Tibetan Parliament in exile, the minister of religion and culture, representatives of non-governmental organizations and sponsors.
2009 also marks the 50 years of the Tibetan community in exile. Part of the event included special thanks and tributes to India, who has provided the Tibetan people with a home and support.
TCV was founded in 1960 to look after Tibetan children, many of whom were orphaned or living in poor conditions and health. From its inception, TCV has played an integral role in the Tibetan community for not only teaching children to be self-reliant and active members of society, but by also preserving the Tibetan identity. With access to both traditional Buddhist teachings and modernist education, many TCV graduates have become practitioners in various fields across the world.
