In the Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure more than 90% of the lateral portion of the stomach is removed. This creates a long cylindrical pouch which restricts food volume.
Weight loss with this operation tends to be superior to gastric banding and similar to that seen with gastric bypass. Weight loss is attributed to a reduction in eating capacity and appetite suppression which is associated with this procedure. The reduction in stomach size leads to a significant reduction in " hunger hormone" production (grehlin and others) and produces long term appetite suppression.
