The late Iraqi 'ud player Munir Bashir, whose style is influenced by the artistry of his Turkish trained teacher Sharif Muhyi al-Din Haydar, presents a highly lyrical style which unlike the traditional mainstream of Arab 'ud playing appears seamless, thus avoiding clear cut qaflat and phrase delineations. Many of hhis typically long performances stay in the same maqam and maintain a subdued, meditative mood quite consistently. Listeners sometimes speak of non-Arab influences on his style, including North Indian ragas and jazz. Having performed in various major cities in Asia, Europe and North America, Bashir has created improvisatory works that are intended to evoke specific impressions, for example those of ancient Babylon. Deriving significantly from the Iraqi modal tradition, Bashir's style is also highly ambient. Employing subtle but effective dynamic inflections and a gradual build up in the intensity of picking, his playing is known to demand quiet concentration on the part of the listeners.*

  • I feel the same to this tunes as you lokiboy, its increadible compelling, its almost as its tainted in some ancient memory, its hard to express the beauty as you spell it.. Must be all this hashis that spooking in my mind man. Its soulful music..

  • thanks for sharing your thoughts with us

  • How could it be that, I, born in America, feel as though I have heard the haunting beauty of the oud and one of it's masters before?

To my mind it is unquestionable that Mr. Bashir is able to transcend his instrument and express himself with such beauty and soulfulness. Every time I hear him, he leaves me in tears....

If only I could express myself so purely, in any form......

Thank you for this bit of magic -- it always make feel more.......human.

    Blessing be upon you

    Marc

  • This is without a doubt the most emotional piece of music i have ever heard. Perfect in every way. Flipping through Munir Bashir clips, i landed on this one, and it just struck a nerve. Its as if i had heard this piece before....perhaps before i was even born. Beautiful.

  • I know nothing about the Oud or Arabic music but this is very profound. Initially the severe mood is striking. But on further listens there's also a great deal of complexity.. of melodic ideas, phrasing, time. Looking through other clips of munir bashir, he's clearly a master but this clip in particular stands out. Thanks for posting.

  • One of the Iraqi OUD legends , as well as his son Omar Bashir and the great Naseer Shamma ,,
