Georgia Southern seniors Raja Andrews and Chris Covington reflect on their experiences wearing the blue and white as Eagle football players after the 2008 season.
2008 was a tough year by Georgia Southern standards. A 6-5 record was highlighted by three victories in four overtime games, but the team finished out of playoff contention and had a losing record at home for the first time ever, I believe.
Expectations always run high at a program that has notched six Football Championship Series (Division I-AA) titles. Andrews and Covington experienced three coaching changes in their four years, with all the ups and downs that come with such turnover. However, both players emerged as leaders for the storied program, with Covington being named the 2008 Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year and Andrews becoming the Eagles' all-time leading receiver. I asked them to sit down and talk to me about their time at Georgia Southern.
I thought about re-editing the end of this piece because they talk about the great future with Head Coach Chris Hatcher. However, Hatcher was fired after the 2009 season, failing to make the playoffs for three straight years. In the end, I felt the story reflected a piece of history and the players are such great ambassadors, I left the piece, as is.
GO EAGLES!!!!!!! ;)
