***THIS FIX IS ONLY FOR 0X0000C1F5 ONLY! IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER BSOD CODE, GOOGLE IT FOR AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD***
This horrible failure happened on my friend's laptop, which caused it not to boot normally, in safe mode or even from the Vista DVDRom!!! It happened when she was installing a service pack for Vista and the installation was interrupted.

STOP PRESS - There is now an alternative! (Thanks to sickboy1977 for the info) - Insert a Windows 7 Installation disc, boot into the first part of the installation and cancel the install. It fixes the corrupt $TfxLog.
However if you DON'T have a Windows 7 disc, this method as described in the video, is the only alternative at this time.

and the website for the amazing linux-based System Rescue CD

http://sysresccd.org/Main_Page
(Use the 'download' tab on the left to download the ISO (disc image) file using the SOUNDFORGE link and use disc burning software such as Nero, to burn the ISO on to a CDR)

Obviously, as your PC is not working, you'll need to use a friend's pc to burn this cd. But then again, you're seeing this page so you MUST have a friend with a pc!!

Good luck!!

PS Make sure you update the Service Packs on your Vista machine to prevent this happening again as I think there is a fix for it now in either SP2 or SP3.

  • thanx a lot been without laptop for a week an you saved the day

  • @68beth - Pleasure! Glad you got it sorted. The alternatives don't bear thinking about! Not easy but well done!

  • What's the country code for US?

  • Sorry it's not 1, it's 41. It's to do with the keyboard input map.

  • Hey thanks so much for saving my computer. You are awesome, keep up the good work. Just a quick not to all. Make sure you type the spaces in correctly. The video doesn't point them all out but you can tell by reading the screen where they are. It works, just bare the typos you will self incur.

  • @USMC786 - Thanks dude. Have re-annotated to hopefully put in spaces I missed before. Thanks for the feed back....and glad your comp is saved :-)

  • i tried the other ISO file and it ask me for a country code put when i hit 41 or 40 it tells me it cant read disk or their is no system disk.

  • @MeAndMyJays Same here. Won't boot the CD no matter what I've tried

  • i think i got the CD correct but when it loads it ask how i want to run it and i just hit default. when i do this it sits and does nothing but remains on. im at the point where it was supposed to ask for a country code but did not.

  • Thank you for the info! the Windows 7 disk worked!

  • Only on Windows will you encounter a problem as ridiculous as this one. Thank goodness that Linux is there to save the day!

  • @JohnWesleyMethodism I gave up on the Ubuntu Live CD and installed this System Rescue iso on a USB stick. It worked flawlessly! Thanks so much!

  • I'm trying to do this with my Ubuntu 10.04 cd so that I can avoid wasting my last cd-r. NTFS-3G is installed on Ubuntu by default. But when I try to mount the disk I get an error: "No such file or directory." Despite that error, I am able to view the disk drive and the files on it.
