Leeds Met has launched 'When Leeds Met Monopoly', a twice over world-record breaking Monopoly attempt for the biggest number of people playing in a Monopoly contest and the longest Monopoly tournament. The competition aims to raise £250,000 for community and volunteering activities in support of the University's Corporate Plan and statement of Vision and Character.

The challenge, which was launched on Thursday 27 November at the Leeds City Museum and is expecting 8,000 participants, aims to increase awareness of local and international volunteering at Leeds Met and build on the University's partnerships with the business community.

Mystery and spot prizes will be given out during the heats and quarter-final stages of the tournament. These prizes will be announced on the website and through the media. The further participants get, the better the prizes they win, with the overall 'When Leeds Met Monopoly' Champion 2009 winning a Family Holiday worth £6,000.

The tournament costs £30 to enter, with each participant receiving a free t-shirt. Registrations can also be made in teams of five at £150 for the group and this will include a Leeds version of Monopoly.

Registration will be available from December 2008 through to February 2009. Heats will be played from Saturday 28 February until Easter. The quarter-finals will be on Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 April and the semi-finals and grand final will be played on May Day, Monday 4 May 2009.

Project leader, Rai Shacklock said, "'When Leeds Met Monopoly' is a difficult challenge in the current economic climate. However, with the anticipated interest in the Leeds version of Monopoly and being part of the Guinness World record attempt we would like to invite people to participate in some way. We are not only hoping to achieve our objectives but also to raise awareness of Leeds Met community and volunteering activities and therefore achieve some of our and our partners corporate social responsibility objectives."

Participants can register on line www.leedsmet.ac.uk/monopoly or by cheque on an application form made payable to Leeds Metropolitan University and sent to Lucy McCann, Fundraising, Sponsorship and Alumni Administrator, F302A, Leeds Metropolitan University, Civic Quarter, Leeds LS1 3HE West Yorkshire. No entry fee is refundable but can be transferred to another player up to the end of heat one. After that date 'named winners only' will play in the quarter, semi and grand finals.
