Jesus teaches that we're not to pray like religious people. We don't need to carry a prayer rug around with us and face east when we do. We just talk to our Dad.

This clip is taken from the sermon The Lord's Prayer, and can be found in full at http://www.marshillchurch.org/media/pray-like-jesus/the-lords-prayer

  • It's just so ironic that Pr Mark rails against "religion" and "religious people" completely ignoring the fact that the Christianity that he feels connected to has a history of righteous religious men and women who have not only defended the doctrine of the Church but also given the Church a spiritual life through prayer, fasting, liturgy etc. Mark thinks it's ok to sign up for their doctrine, then bashes them for being "religious". Lent starts today. I'd invite you to try it :)

  • @brendos444 Prayer doesn't have to be ritualized. But it sure helps that it is. We need discipline. This does not automatically mean that ritual prayer is inherently bad. There are dangers. But there are even greater dangers in the freeform prayer that Driscoll endorse. Prayer and God risk becoming trivialized. Instead Jesus, the apostles and the Church Fathers all give us a structured way to pray. And there's good reason and much wisdom in this.

  • @killerproctologist88 In no place does the NT oppose chanting. Chanting has been orthodox Church practise for centuries. To interpret that verse as being against chanting is misuse of the text. If you want to know why Jesus opposed Pharasaical prayer look at the parable of the Pharisee and the publican. Don't cast aspersions on the centuries of monks who have chanted the Psalms and prayed the Lord's prayer AND protected the church from heresy

  • @brendos444 The Jewish guy was a perfect example of how not to pray according to Jesus Christ. I thought it was a perfect example, the Jewish mans sincerity is irrelevant in this context. You misunderstand, those prayers are okay to pray, but not repeat over and over and over in succession because that would be essentially chanting. The point is, prayer doesn't HAVE to be structured or ritualized as religious people do Amen?

  • @BPittMusic Notice how you completely missed the point.

  • I mean his attack on that Jewish gentleman is just so hypocritical. As if Jesus would have rebuked that particular man. As if Driscoll knows how sincere this guy is. Talk about judging on appearances. Further, it goes against centuries of orthodox Christian practises in monasteries where scriptural prayers like the Our Father, the Jesus prayer, the Psalms have been prayed. Instead, guys like Driscoll think that prayer is just freeform conversation without structure or discipline.

  • @indianpilgrim Jesus is not only Jew, he is your creator in flesh. He desire a pure in heart relationship. And he did not pray like that, read his words, he has shown us how to pray and it not hard. He desire a relationship and some prayer ritual. Are we not his children, we ought to act like one and not act like this world.

  • I rather just talk to my father, I am his daughter. He doesn't like religion. He is our creator and our father. We just need to respect him and just share our thoughts. He knows our needs. He quoted the scripture, if anyone is against those quote, they need to take that up with Jesus and not our brother. He spoke the truth and it is simple to understand.

  • ill let him offend you. lol

  • @BPittMusic btw his criticism of other christians is another video. im sure u'll stumble upon it if ur concerned about his point and/or praying.
