When Google announced it would cease censoring Chinese search results even if it meant decamping from China, most observers assumed that Beijing wouldn't hesitate to show them the door. But as weeks passed, the other shoe refused to drop. Even after Hillary Clintons policy address on Internet freedom less than two weeks later, the situation remained in limbo. The prolonged hesitation points to the complex nature of Beijings relationship with the Internet. This talk will address misperceptions about Internet censorship in China, the reasons for Google's announcement, and the impact that a Google withdrawal might have on the Chinese Internet ecosystem.

  • @at57 it may be a blow to their market share initially, but you are right about where their values (or publicly-perceived values) are at, and on return I believe this will be a smarter and more profitable stance for Google overall.

  • St. Ambrose :'When you are at Rome, live as the Roman style. when you are elsewhere, live as they live elsewhere." Dinaseur blame.....for it extinction. in fact, they can't live without the head.

  • Go Google!!!!!!! I use chrome and it rocks!!!!! WAY BETTER THAN MICROSOFT OR FIREFOX!!! WAY BETTER!!!!!!!

  • He's a Jap, a Taiwanese ?

  • Google has been banned once by China.

  • It will be a huge blow to Google's business, losing about 30% of market, but censoring is important to Chinese govt. and Google values internet freedom more.
