And yes, Herbie credits Lennon. The song is credited to Lennon/McCartney, as McCartney added lyrical arrangements to 'Norwegian Wood"

The recent comments seem to subjectively judge this piece in the context of the Beatles tune..the only relation I hear is the sax phrase in the beginning...jazz is supposed to be abstract! This is a beautiful piece, with an apparently unfortunately weighted title.

@spacepatrolman your right when you say scofields playing is too abstract on this he sounds like zappa

@dixxjamm george harrison wrote norwegian wood he wasnt the main songwriter in the group but at this point he was developing into one and he sang on it I dont know where your getting this story that these songs are a homage to bob dylan it doesnt sound right dylan told lennon your songs dont say anything and he wrote nowhere man john scofield did some good guitar playing on the gerry mulligan and chet baker live 2 record set on CTI

amazing how Scofield enters into his solo. So much listening !

No disrespect to the great Herbie Hancock, and not that it matters, but Norwegian Wood was written by John Lennon, not Paul McCartney, he plays rhythm guitar and lead voice on the original. Together with You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, this song was meant as an indirect homage to Bob Dylan, as far as I know. I also think that this is about the only problem that I have with John Scofield,he's a bit to abstract and brutal when he's supposed to be lyrical and smooth, otherwise he's my favourite

@TehWinnerz LOL. It's Elias and that's some Cider in that jug that the band got drunk after the show.

This is my favorite album at the moment. Some of the best piano playing ever recorded IMO.
I produced this record for Verve. What a great time. The songs are all over 15-25 minutes. Lots of edits to get it down to one cd... Many outakes too.. Guy Eckstine
