My parents took the family to a quaint chalet on the shores of Suncook Lake in New Hampshire July of 1975. I was 7 years old. That trip was very important to me because to this day it still serves as my most happy and warm memory of my life. This song serves as the soundtrack to that summer and I cry EVERY time I hear it.

My parents are gone now as they both passed on last year so that memory is even more important to me now. This song is for you Mom and Dad. I love you both with all my heart

This song is about a particular night in Elton's life. He and Bernie Taupin, the lyricist, lived in a basement flat with Elton's girlfriend.

Taupin and Elton were already a songwriting team.

Taupin and John Baldry convinced Elton to break up with his girl friend.

John Baldry - look him up - is "Sugar Bear".

That's what this song is about.

Well said, and by the way I think pipey61 is probably a fan of this song. It is funny how many people think Elton wrote the lyrics. That being said, the power of the song isn't to be dissected. Their collaboration was so special, as you pointed out, because it was personal. Jerry needed Hunter, Elton needed Bernie, and we need what they all found.

"THROCKING: a style of drumming, favored by Nigel Olsson of the Elton John Band, which resembles the sound of a frankfurter being slapped against a bucket. An excellent example of this may be heard on the track "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" from the "Captain Midnight And The Brown Dirt Cowboy" album". --Douglas Adams, "The Meaning Of Liff".
