People who like claiming games are clones, sorry, but I think it's kinda hard for every game that gets released or pitched to developers to be 100% Unique each and every time without refering to a familiar title that people seem to love for guidance. Get over yourselves, I'm sure if you look deep enough, Gears, COD and even WoW used a cheat sheet here and there to become what they are.

Yeah, I know this is a late reply, what with 7 months time and all.
That said, no, Space Marines existed before guardsmen. They were created as the main combat force of the Imperium at first. IG force was created after the SM liberated/annexed too many planets and can't defend all of them.

Play the orirginal strategy game 40K, you'll see it is quite original and brilliant.

@UltraRydenX a swarmlord is pretty much melee only, that's a huge disadvantage in multiplayer, unless you give it massive health.
although tyranid exterminatus mode might be awesome
