Shogun 01

John Blackthorne, an English ship pilot, whose vessel wrecked upon the Japanese coast in the early 17th century is forced to deal with the two most powerful men in Japan in these days. He is thrown in the midst of a war between Toranaga and Ishido, who struggle for the title of Shogun which will give ultimate power to the one who possesses it.

It totally amazes me how a simple clip of a 30+ year-old miniseries can raise so much political BS from people. Has anyone ever considered just watching the clip and keeping the racial/sexual/political comments out of it? And if you don't like the clip...OK...move on. Why stir up so much crap? Personally, I loved the series and just recently purchased it on DVD from a site called FamilyVideo. Not too expensive and it has the 5th disc with extras. And who cares that Mr Chamberlain is gay??

Very loosely based on real people circa 1600. Toranaga was based on ieyasu tokugawa, blackthorne was based on will Adams.

As far as I know it, there were 3 foreigner samurais in the Age of Civil Wars. Englishman William Adams(三浦按針) who acted as a model of Anjin, Dutch Jan Joosten van Loodensteijn(耶楊子) who got on the wreck with Adams, and Mozambican Yasuke(弥助) who came to Japan as a slave of an Italian missionary. Adams and Joosten did Ieyasu's diplomatic advisor-like work, but Yasuke campaigned in several wars as Nobunaga's praetorian.

@davazno1 If you liked shogun then you will love The Journeyer by Gary Jennings, it's about the travels of Marco Polo. I read it back in 1984 when it was first published and have never forgotton it. Give it a go.
